Youtube Channel, A King, posts Shaw University’s “Platinum Sound”, halftime performance against rivalry HBCU, St. Augustine University. After being reestablished in 2002 with only 80 members, the band has now grown to over 130 members. The Platinum Sound Marching Band was featured in the Honda Battle of the Bands back in 2008.
Founded in 1865 by Henry Tupper, Shaw University is a private Baptist liberal arts and HBCU located in Raleigh, North Carolina. It is the first historically black college to be founded in the Southern United States. Since its establishment, Shaw University has been referred to as the ‘mother of African-American colleges in North Carolina’ The university is affiliated with the General Baptist State Convention of North Carolina and a member of the National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc.
Shaw University was one of the cofounders amongst several HBCUs of the NCAA Division II’s Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA), the oldest African American athletic association in the nation. The Shaw University Bears have won conference championships in football, tennis, volleyball, and men’s and women’s basketball. In total, the Bears have won a total of 60 CIAA championships. Outside of the 14 offered varsity sports, Shaw also offers intramural and extramural sports for students. Furthermore, the university offers organizations on campus including greek life, clubs, and honor societies.
Notable Shaw alumni include the founding presidents of North Carolina Central University, Elizabeth City State University, and Fayetteville State University. Other members of the Shaw alumni association are civil rights leader Ella Baker, R&B legend Gladys Knight, and gospel singer Shirley Caesar.
