Youtube Channel, ShowtimeWeb, posts Benedict College’s marching band, “Band of Distinction” performing at the 2020 Honda Battle of the Bands. Joining alongside the band was Benedict’s dance team, the “Sweet Sensation.” Other HBCU participants in the showcase included Florida A&M, Grambling State, Hampton University, Jackson State University, North Carolina A&T, Prairie View A&M, and Tennessee State. This was Benedict College’s second appearance in the Honda Battle of the Bands.
Benedict College was originally found as teachers’ college in 1870 by Bathsheba A. Benedict. Today, it is a private co-educational liberal arts HBCU located in Columbia, South Carolina with over 2,100 students and 34 baccalaureate degree programs. The college welcomes student from not only South Carolina but in 30 different states across the nation and more than 26 countries worldwide. Benedict is in fact a liberal arts institution, however they also offer programs within the STEM field, Cyber Security, Sports Management, Biology, and more. Benedict College has previously been highly recognized for its academic programs and has proven to be a successful institution for students. Within the past ten years, three out of five Benedict College graduates have continued their studies at professional or graduate schools.
Benedict’s intercollegiate athletic teams, known as the purple and gold Tigers, are members of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) of the NCAA Division II and offer a total of 14 varsity men and women sports. Their marching band, “Band of Distinction”, typically perform at football games, basketball games, and other special events on campus.
